Holiday parade, tree lighting drawing near

November 12, 2012
The Alpena News

ALPENA - The annual kickoff the holiday season is rapidly approaching with two popular events - the holiday parade and the lighting of the Christmas tree - on Nov. 23.

Registration forms are still being accepted for the annual Bolenz Jewelry Holiday Parade, which begins at 5:30 p.m. The Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce advises that the Christmas/holiday theme should be the dominating factor in preparing float, from there let your imagination take over.

Entries will be judged on originality, overall attractiveness, and effort extended. Music is not required but may be considered by the judges. The parade begins at the Annex building parking lot at the corner of Chisholm Street and Ninth Avenue, travels down Chisholm, left onto Second Avenue, right onto Water Street, and ends in the parking lot behind city hall.

Registrations forms are available at the chamber office at 235 W. Chisholm Street or online at www.alpenachamber.com. Forms must be turned in by Monday to be eligible for judging. Winners will be announced during the tree lighting ceremony following the parade. Trophies will be given to first, second and third in commercial entries and first through fifth place for non-commercial entries (non-commercial also receive a cash prize.) For questions contact the chamber at 354-4181.

Immediately following the parade is the annual Light up a Life event, sponsored by Hospice of Michigan and the Alpena Downtown Development Authority. The event is a way to recognize and honor loved ones

Hospice of Michigan reminds everyone that the holidays are often a reminder of how much we value family and friends, and the tradition created over the years.

Hospice will display the names of honored and loved ones on a projection screen during and after the holiday parade. If you would like your loved one's name included, send the name of the honored/loved one, name of family member for notification and your name and address for an acknowledgement letter. You also may stop into the Hospice of Michigan office in Alpena with your information. To mail your request, send to: Hospice of Michigan, 112 W. Chisholm St., Alpena, MI 49707. The contact person is Shirley Haan, development associate, 358-4291. There is a suggested donation of $10.
