Road commission wins workman’s comp award

ALPENA - The Alpena County Road Commission was awarded a worker's compensation award from the County Road Commission Self Insurance Fund. The award was earned because over the course of the last three years the road commission has had a low number of workman's comp claims than many of the other 69 road commissions in the fund.

The facility earned a less than 1 rating in the loss modification factor, which is determined with a formula based on size and number of employees. The rating will ensure the road commission will have to pay less into the self insurance fund.

Managing Director Larry Orcutt said measures are taking to educate his staff about dangers on the job and ways to avoid injury.

"A big part of our process every day is to focus on safety for our employees," Orcutt said. "Our injuries directly impact the premiums we pay into the fund."

Chairman Neil MacArthur said he is proud of the hard work Orcutt said his team has done to stay safe and keep workman compensation claims to a minimum.

"There is a lot of emphasis put on safety. The meetings help make the crews aware of the hazards out on the roads and here in the garage," MacArthur said. "The savings can be significant. As an example our liability insurance we have very few claims on it and the refunds are between $40,000 and $60,000 twice a year."

The meeting scheduled for Nov. 20 has been canceled and rescheduled for Nov. 27 at 3 p.m. at the county garage.
