Hoping for solution to save Sprinkler Lake

November 2, 2012
The Alpena News

As an educator, whose career spanned approximately 35 years, in two different school districts, I was saddened when I recently received a letter from the Sprinkler Lake Education Center. I was told it would be forced to suspend their educational programs and that Nature Fest was going to be cancelled for the fall.

Sprinkler Lake Education Center is a jewel. It is a place where children from the surrounding areas in NE Michigan have been afforded opportunities to receive instruction that has enhanced their learning of math, science, and nature in general. It is a place where there are dormitories for overnight stays, classroom facilities with certified educators, and an entire forest with nature trails for students and families to explore, learn and become engaged in problem solving. It is a place where dedicated teachers and volunteers offer their talents and expertise in educating our students of NE Michigan.

We know that experimental hands-on learning is a critical part of math and science and Sprinkler Lake provided that. I'm hoping a successful solution can be found and the AMA ESD School District can once again open this "jewel" for our children.
