UNIVERSITY CENTER- Ethan Crowell became the first Alpena High School boys state finals qualifer in cross country since 1999 after finishing 10th in a Division 1 regional on Saturday.
Crowell's time of 16:27 was his second-best of the season and paced the Wildcats' boys team which posted slower times in chilly weather.
Crowell will run in the state finals next Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.
Alcona’s Megan Quick qualified for the Division 4 cross country finals after finishing eighth at a regional on Friday. Quick qualified in Alcona’s first year of cross country.
Alpena finished eighth, behind Grand Blanc, Traverse City Central; Saginaw Heritage, Midland, Traverse City West, Swartz Creek and Midland Dow.
Other runners for Alpena's boys team included Elisha Martin, who posted a career-best time of 16:59 and finished 29th; Jacob Benson was 46th at 17:22; Tellis Donajkowski was 54th and ran a career-best 17:40; RJ Centala was 62nd at 17:57; Nevin McHarg was 78th at 18:38 and Ben Diamond was 86th at 18:58.
Elaine Lowe led the Alpena girls team with a 17th place finish of 19:21 and missed qualifying for the finals by two spots. Lowe will end her Alpena career having posted the third-fastest girl's time in school history at 19:12.
Alpena's girls team finished fifth out of 14 teams, trailing only Traverse City Central, Midland Dow, Davison and Traverse City West.
Other runners for the Wildcats were: Kelsey Lewis, who ran a career-best 19:33 and finished 20th; Racheal McDonald, who finished 23rd and ran a 20:10 for her second-best time ever; Amanda Dort, who ran a career-best 21:10 and took 42nd place; Leah Centala, who finished 44th and ran a career-best 21:15; Christine Burke was 71st at 22:34 and Hannah MacDonald finished 74th at 22:53.
Alpena's boys team will return five of its seven regional runners next year and Alpena's girls team will return two.

qualify for finals
CENTRAL LAKE-The Rogers City boys cross country team qualified for the Division 4 cross country finals after finishing third at a regional on Saturday.
Warren Beach led the Hurons with a 13th place finish of 18:25. Following him were: Paul Wilbert (21st, 18:56), Jacob Sobeck (27th, 19:08), Alex Andrzejewski (34th, 19:29), Blake Fessler (39th, 19:51), Colton Fessler (46th, 20:19) and Daniel Pflug (51st, 20:29).
Other local boys qualifiers were Onaway's Joe Traynham (10th, 18:12) and Fairview's David Haskin (14th, 18:19).

LAKE CITY-Alcona's Megan Quick qualified for the cross country state finals in the Tigers' first year of cross country after running in a girls Division 4 regional in Lake City on Friday. Quick finished eighth out of 100 runners with a time of 21:06.
