I am infuriated to learn of an automated call being sent through the community against my sister-in-law retired Alpena Mayor Carol Shafto. Carol is from a large, close-knit family of eight, but she was inseparable from her brother/father/best friend Jim Schmidt. Jim became my husband when Carol performed a bedside marriage ceremony as he was dying March 2011. She was absolutely devastated by his sudden loss. Carol drove our sister-in-law, Marie, to the airport after the funeral and the plane was delayed for hours causing missed connections and chaos. It was the last straw and Carol freely admits being upset. But as a consumer, a private citizen. I wasn't there. I can't testify as to what was said. I believe both Carol and Marie who told us what happened long before a perverted account appeared in the paper. When you become a public servant do you give up any rights to complain about poor service as a private citizen? I don't remember that from civics. And what on earth does this have to do with the recall? This happened 18 months ago. This is an attempt at diverting the public's attention and to discredit Ms. Shafto. I am absolutely disgusted that the three subject to recall are using a time of family tragedy to mask the issues. They are capitalizing on a moment of grief to discredit a person who loves this town and who has served it faithfully for more than 1/3 of her life. Even if she said absolutely everything claimed, if blowing up at an airport over missed connections during a family emergency is the worst thing that Mayor Shafto did in 24 years, I would call that a triumph of public service. Those who know her and her reputation know this is a disgusting red herring.
