Carol Shafto has been villainized in recent robo-calls for comments she supposedly made at the Airport in March 2011. I am personally aware of this situation and know that she was upset when a very late plane caused her family to miss flight connections after her brother's funeral. Most of what the robo-caller asserts is untrue. What has this to do with recall? Absolutely nothing. Months later when Ms. Shafto contacted the USDOT as a supporter and former mayor, this, in part, is what she said: "I served 16 years on the Alpena City Council, the last four as Mayor, retiring in December 2011. I have been an avid supporter of Alpena for many years. While serving as "Cheerleader-in-Chief" I often spoke of the many attributes, attractions and amenities of Alpena as the market hub of northeast Michigan." She went on, "Alpena is indeed an incredible community but not if you can't get to it by air. Alpena needs to have a reliable, dependable, regularly scheduled passenger airline. We need it for business travel, for personal travel, for recreational travel, to schedule a major conference or to host a sporting or civic event. The Skywest proposal offering service to Detroit and Minneapolis is ideal. I believe with reliable service that Alpena enplanements would or could soar - well above the current levels. It is hard to project enplanements for the future based on recent past performance because so many have chosen to fly from elsewhere because we lacked the assurance that our flights would actually...well, fly. Bring back that belief, and you will bring back the viability of Alpena as a community that can support long term air service." This letter is public record. Contact the Chamber of Commerce.
