Alpena girls XC finishes with record best 2nd

GAYLORD- The Alpena girls cross country team took second place at the Big North Cross Country Championship on Tuesday, earning its highest conference finish in school history.

Elaine Lowe finished seventh overall (20:15) and earned 1st team All-Conference honors. Racheal MacDonald (11th, 20:39) and Kelsey Lewis (13th, 20:39) both earned second-team honors.

Alpena finished with 80 points as Traverse City Central won the conference with a perfect score of 15. Other finishers were: Traverse City West (81), Cadillac (105), Gaylord (123), Petoskey (158) and Ogemaw Heights (170).

Alpena High cross country runners Racheal MacDonald, Elaine Lowe, Kelsey Lewis and Ethan Crowell all earned Big North All-Conference honors at the conference championship in Gaylord on Tuesday. Crowell and Lowe earned 1st team honors while Lewis and MacDonald earned 2nd team honors.

Other runners for Alpena included Amanda Dort (20th, 21:47) and Leah Centala (29th, 22:22).

Ethan Crowell earned 1st team All-Conference honors for Alpena after finishing third in the boys race at 17:10.

The Wildcats finished fourth with 93 points, behind Central (30), West (60) and Gaylord (82) and ahead of Petoskey (115), Cadillac (147) and Ogemaw (205).

Other finishers for the Wildcats included: Elisha Martin (16th, 17:46), Jacob Benson (23rd, 18:07), RJ Centala (24th, 18:12) and Tellis Donajkowski (55th, 18:22).

"They all worked hard and pushed themselves to their limits. "I am very proud of them all," Alpena coach Joy Bullis said.

SOCCER

Alcona 5, Harbor Springs 2

PETOSKEY -The Alcona soccer team played Harbor Springs in the Distric semi-finals on Wednesday, winning 5-2.

Jared Steiner led the team offensively with two goals and two assists. Trenton LaVergne scored three goals.

Aaron Ritchie had a great night of goal tending handling seven saves.

Alcona moves on to the District Finals on Friday in?Petoskey. They play against Burt Lake-Northern Michigan Christian Academy at four o'clock.

VOLLEYBALL

Cadillac 3, Alpena 0

The Alpena girls varsity volleyball team played in Cadillac on Wednesday, losing in three sets.

The game scores were 18-25, 11-25 and 13-25. Breanna Bourdage had a big offensive game with 10 kills and helped out defensively with 14 digs. Emma Strong and Taylor Genschaw had four kills a piece. Genschaw also had 15 digs.

Ami Milligan had a huge night defensively with 18 digs while Mkaela Overton had 14 digs.

The?JV team lost 14-25 and 13-25.

The freshmen volleyball team had a big night, winning against Cadillac 25-17, 12-25 and 25-15. Ellie Wedge had five kills and 12 digs. Allison Heise had eight aces and 12 of her own digs.

Alpena hosts Petoskey next Wednesday.

Tawas 3, Alcona 1

The Alcona Tigers volleyball team played in Tawas on Wednesday, losing in four sets. The scores were 22-25, 25-22, 14-25 and 12-25.

Nikki Smith led the team offensively with four aces and 24 assists. Karina Cole contributed eight kills as well as two blocks for the team.

Carly Mitchell contributed two of her own blocks to the Alcona defense while Sam Zervst helped out in the back with eight digs.

Alcona play tonight in Hale.
