Retailers recommend checking to see if cereal part of recall

At least one box of Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats cereal which has been subject to a recall due to metal shavings being included in the food has been found in Alpena, but there may be more. People who have purchased the product are encouraged to take measures to be sure they are protected by calling a special hot line at Kellogg's or visiting the place of purchase. Kellogg's has notified stores and consumers it is voluntarily removing 2.8 million boxes of the popular cereal.

Andy Pozniak of Alpena said he was on the Internet and saw the news about the recall. He said he knew he had just purchased a box of the cereal in question and decided to cross check the box with the information provided from the company and it was one included in the recall. He said he buys the cereal quite regularly, but he had yet opened the box. He said Kellogg's instructed him to keep the box sealed and to discard it.

"I called the 1-800 number and told them and they told me to throw it away and they are sending me a voucher to get a new box," Pozniak said. "If you have a box of the cereal all you have to do is call and they will walk you through and be able to tell you right away if it is included in the recall."

At Walmart in Alpena the inventory of the cereal on the shelves was inspected and, according to Assistant Manager Deanna Silver, were dealt with the way Kellogg's recommended.

"All of the boxes that were on the list have been removed," Silver said. "If someone has a box they are not sure about or is on the list, they can bring it in and they will get a full refund or can exchange it for another box of cereal. As of now I'm not aware of anybody returning any."

Neiman's Family Market owner Hal Neiman said as soon as a recall is sent to the store his staff reviews each product included in it to determine if it is included. He said his store was notified of the recall on Oct. 8 and his store had received 350 boxes on the recall list. Neiman said the product on the shelf that met Kellogg's criteria was removed right away and a second check was done a few days later that proved none remained. Neiman said it is impossible for the store to know how many of the boxes of Frosted Mini-Wheats had been sold because it is a popular product and sells quickly. He said if a person has concerns or needs help, they can bring the cereal to the store whether it was purchased there or not.

"As of Oct. 10, I can say for sure we have not had any on the shelves," Neiman said. "If you do have a box of Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats and and have questions you can bring it in and we will give you a refund or you can make an exchange, whether you purchased it here or not. People can also bring the box in here and we can check it for them."

Pozniak said his cereal was purchased from Walmart in Alpena, but Silver didn't want to speculate as to if or how many recalled cereal boxes the store may have had in its stock or been sold.
