BAY CITY-The Alpena High School volleyball team finished as the runner-up at the Essexville-Garber Invitational on Saturday.
Alpena earned first place in its pool after splitting with Flint Powers (18-25 and 25-15), defeating Pinconning (25-16 and 25-18), and defeating Hemlock (25-15, 25-19).
In the playoffs, Alpena defeated Sanford Meridian in the first round (25-23 and 26-24). The semifinal match paired Alpena with a familiar opponent in Bay City Western. Two weeks ago, the Wildcats lost to Bay City Western in the semifinal match of the Pinconning Invitational. Alpena produced different results this time around, winning 28-26, 13-25, 15-11.
The Alpena High School volleyball team took second place at the Essexville-Garber Tournament on Saturday, winning five matches before losing to Reed City in the finals.
Alpena advanced to the finals against Reed City but lost 18-25, 20-25.
The Wildcats was led by Ami Milligan who had 119 assists and 17 blocks and Brenna Bourdage with 62 kills, 15 blocks, and nine aces. Taylor Genschaw added 33 kills and 25 defensive digs; Mikaela Overton had 31 digs and and Emma Strong had 20 kills.
