ALPENA - Besser Elementary School students were introduced to a new schoolmate - one who is barking to make Besser its home. The new Besser bulldog mascot arrived Friday afternoon and visited each classroom, bringing smiles and uplifting school spirit at the end of the school day.
"It's a new year and we have a new principal, we wanted to do something that would encourage school spirit and bulldog pride," Jayne Lusardi, parent advisory council member, said.
The new mascot was brought into Besser through a partnership with the school and PAC. However, Besser students also are playing a large role in finalizing the new mascot.

The new Besser bulldog mascot stopped at Stacey Cross’ kindergarten classroom on Friday, and then made his way to the rest of the elementary school classrooms.
"Now, we need to name him. Each grade level will vote on the six final names to put on the election ballot," Lusardi said.
On Nov. 6 all Alpena Public Schools elementary students will have the opportunity to vote in a mock election for the presidential election, and learn the voting process during the mock election for their choice of president. In addition to that learning process, each Besser class will vote on a name for new school mascot.
"I'm very appreciative of our Besser PAC working hard to increase our already high levels of school spirit," Principal Eric Cardwell said.
