CADILLAC-The Alpena High School boys soccer team secured fourth place in the Big North Conference-it's highest finish since 2005-with a 4-1 win against Cadillac on Tuesday.
Aaron Mead scored twice and Mitch Skiba recorded his seven shutout for the Wildcats (9-6-2 overall, 5-4-2 Big North), who led 3-0 at the half and played a good all-around game.
"We really did well in all three phases of the game: possession, defensive play and we were excellent on restarts," Alpena coach Tim Storch said. "We had two goals on restarts."
Dillon Kendziorski and Jon Fitch added a goal each for Alpena and Sawyer Hein had two assists.
Alpena closes out the regular season on Thursday against Petoskey at home.
Alpena finishes 4th in Big North
The Alpena High School boys tennis finished tied for fourth at the Big North Conference Tournament on Tuesday.
Alpena earned 15 points total and tied for fourth with Traverse City West. Petoskey took first place.
Greg Kucharek finished fourth at third singles and Abram Purol was second at first singles. Alpena's first doubles team of Samyak Harsh and Noah Barney-Steinke earned second place in their flight.
Oscoda 3, Alcona 1
LINCOLN-Despite a large crowd that turned out to watch the fourth annual Volley for a Cure, the Alcona volleyball team couldn't pull out a win, losing to Oscoda 3-1last Thursday by scores of 25-20, 22-25, 17-25 and 22-25.
The Volley for a Cure benefits and raises money for breast cancer awareness.
Nikki Smith had eight aces and 26 digs for the Tigers and Carly Mitchell added nine kills, two blocks and eight digs.
