PELLSTON-The Onaway volleyball team accomplished something Tuesday that it hasn't done in more than a decade.
In a matchup of two of the state's top Class D volleyball teams and two unbeaten teams in the Ski Valley Conference, the Cardinals topped Pellston in four games by scores of 22-25, 25-13, 25-23 and 25-15 to beat the No. 3 Hornets in conference play for the first time in over 10 years.
"It's a big win. Onaway hasn't beaten them in conference play as long as I've been here and that's at least 15 years," Onaway coach Steve Watson said. "The girls played awesome and they're looking forward to a matchup with JoBurg next week."
The No. 8 Cardinals improved to 5-0 in conference play and 23-4-3 overall.
Mariah Ehrke had 15 kills, 26 digs and three aces for Onaway; Megan Estep had 38 assists, three aces and 12 digs; Lexi Szymoniak had 11 kills, three aces and 10 digs; Sara Fullerton added six kills, five aces, four digs and two blocks; Emily Estep had 15 digs and Kallie Shimel added 11 digs.
Posen 3, Au Gres 2
POSEN-The Posen volleyball team rallied back from a two-game deficit to defeat Au Gres in a North Star League volleyball match on Tuesday at Posen High School.
After the Wolverines took the first two games, 30-27 and 25-20, Posen rebounded to take the final three games, 25-13, 25-22 and 15-9.
Mercedes Kowalski and Danielle Rhode each had five aces for the Vikings and Korynn Hincka had 13 kills.
Posen coach Erin Riopelle said her team picked itself up sometime in the third game and never looked back.
"They got a little bit more enthusiastic. It was like there was one big moment where they lit up and started playing better," Riopelle said. "I felt like the team played well, but they really didn't play up to their potential (in the first two games)."
Anna Couture added four aces, 23 assists and one kill for Posen; Kari Ataman had a kill and three aces; Austin Sharpe had a kill and a pair of aces and Monica Bartz had a pair of kills and a pair of aces.
Posen plays at Fairview on Thursday.
The Vikings' JV team defeated Au Gres 2-1 by scores of 25-23, 27-25 and 13-15.
