Spartan Stores announced Wednesday that it had initiated a voluntary and precautionary recall of certain deli products due to concerns of possible listeria monocytogenes contact. Although there is no evidence any of the products in question came into contact with the bacterium, the company decided to pull the products from many stores. Two of the major Spartan retailers in northeastern Michigan - Neiman's Family Market and Glen's Market in Rogers City - will not be affected by the recall, because the more than 100 products aren't stocked in the stores.
Hal Neiman, owner of Neiman's Family Market, said his customers will feel zero effect from the recall, and their health is in no way at risk.
"The recall for us is really a non-issue, because we don't carry any of the items from their commissary," Neiman said. "We have never had any of the products listed and don't have any on the shelves now. For this issue, we are completely out of that particular loop."
Listeria is an organism that can sometimes cause fatal infection in young children and elderly people. Healthy individuals may only suffer from short-term symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea and headache. Larry Fuhrman, director of Glen's Market, said. The store is not affected by the recall either.
"We do not have any of the products in the store, and if people have questions, they are urged to call our corporate offices," Fuhrman said.
Jeanne Norcross, vice president of corporate affairs at Spartan, said the company issued the recall without instruction and stressed none of the products in question have shown any signs of listeria.
"Spartan Stores is seeking precautionary steps to ensure the highest degree of safety and quality to our customers," Norcross said. "No products have been identified as coming into contact with the listeria monocytogenes organism, and Spartan Stores has received no reports of illness associated with the consumption of these products."
