Beach safe for swimming

September 9, 2012
The Alpena News

District Health Department No. 4 has received lab results from additional water samples taken at Blair Street Beach in Alpen and the beaches are safe for swimming. E-coli bacteria levels have returned back to normal and the beaches are safe for all water-related activities.

Recent rainfall and storm water runoff may have contributed to the elevated bacteria levels at Blair Street Beach, as well as a high level of waterfowl activity along the shoreline. Animal and bird droppings can be washed into storm drains from residential neighborhood streets and yards, and then be flushed into lakes.

DHD No. 4 also reminds residents to clean up animal waste from their yards and properly dispose of it. Animal waste left in yards or on the street eventually could get washed into storm drains and end up in Lake Huron.

The health department will continue to monitor bathing beaches on a regular basis to assure a safe and healthy recreational experience.
