Presque Isle County Prosecutor Rick Steiger recently told me the Huron Undercover Narcotics Team (HUNT) is basically a public relations team. The Alpena News story of a HUNT bust in Alcona County confirmed his insight. The entire last paragraph of the story was nothing but a campaign speech for the HUNT millage, which will again be on the ballot in Alcona County after being defeated in August. It is doubly frustrating for the citizens of Alcona County who donated their time and money to defeat the ballot proposal to find it placed back on the ballot 10 days later and then have the Alpena News provide a free campaign ad for HUNT.
Clearly, the comments of Alcona Prosecutor Weichel, who sits on the HUNT board, were not related to the actual arrest story. They were his opinion about the value of HUNT, which is a contested ballot issue. I wonder if the Alpena News will also provide free advertising to the opponents of the HUNT tax. I doubt it.
