As youth we all have dreamed of exotic adventures, top secret missions and other fits of fantasy.
Some might contend brothers Russell and Doug Canfield, with their homemade submarines, never quite grew up and have turned youthful fantasy into adult expeditions.
Imagine a homemade submarine.
How cool is that!
If you read Thursday's newspaper you saw on page one the story and photo of the brothers' submarine. Literally, the submarine reminded us of something we would have read and envisioned in Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea."
Except our vision was but fiction. The Canfields turned their vision into reality.
While someday the brothers hope to use that submarine and two others they built into an eco-tourism business, today they utilize them to help create photographs and video they soon hope to produce into a television documentary.
The engineering and physics involved in constructing the submarine was nothing short of amazing. To think the brothers were able to successfully construct such a highly efficient machine gives hope to each of us whose dreams at times seem higher than the stars.
We wish the brothers success, and continued fun with their "Fugusub," as they call it.
We enjoyed a smile Thursday reading their story, and drifted back to childhood memories of our own after seeing their yellow submarine.
The Canfields were living out their dreams on Lake Huron this week.
"How cool is that!"
