Careless dog owner, teenagers soil memory

August 17, 2012
The Alpena News

I was born and raised in Alpena but currently live in Grand Rapids where my husband is from. I still visit my hometown 3-4 times a year to see my parents, brother, and friends.

I was in Alpena for the July 28 concert at Bay View and excited to take my 18 month old son to play at the kiddie park for the first time. So, when a dog, who was running loose in the park, tackled my son from behind and the owner did nothing I was appalled! I had to pull the dog off my son, pick up my now crying child, and tell the dog to go. I then looked for the owner, who was standing about 10 feet away not doing a thing.

This made me upset and sad. Upset that someone would not be decent enough to take care of their animal and apologize for what happened. Sad because the hometown I know is way better than this.

My parents and I ended up leaving 10 minutes later due to this incident and the teenagers hanging around the park climbing on the equipment and tossing empty water bottles around.

My memory of introducing my son to places I played and enjoyed as a child has now been soiled.
