ALPENA - Alpena Community College's Community Education program has hired two new chefs for cooking classes that will be offered to the public in October. Director Kate Richards-Bruski, said the classes are not for college credit, but serve as an opportunity to learn more through recreation or leisure activities while enhancing practical skills for adult enjoyment.
"It's really a modest cost, and the classes are for a short duration. We're proud to introduce two new chefs to ACC's kitchen," Richards-Bruski said.
Ryan Barnard and J.D. Hilla will be using their culinary skills to teach two new classes during a one-evening learning opportunity. Both chefs have past experiences that will add something unique to their classes - Hilla was professionally trained in France and Barnard has been professionally cooking for over 12 years.
"This is not a series, it's two classes that are priced separately. We are limiting attendance to 15 people for each class, this way everyone will get hands-on experience and time with the instructors. Everyone should bring their own place settings because everyone will dine at the end of the class, it's the best part," she said. "The menus are always good."
The first class will be offered Oct. 9 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will give people an opportunity to learn simplified techniques to produce a sophisticated meal with limited time. The evening's menu includes chicken fettuccini alfredo, portabellas and spinach, and a souffle dessert.
The second class will be held Oct. 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and will offer lessons on cooking blackened flank steak, red chimichurri sauce and chili pepper chorizo polenta. The remainder of the menu and dessert course will be announced at the class.
"This is my first time teaching a class, it's going to be cool to share what I've learned with people," Barnard said.
Both classes have a $25 fee and will be two hours long and held at ACC in the CTR 104 room. Pre-registration is required and recommended at least a week before the class starts.
