It's time again for another Wings Over Alpena air show, and the 2012 version for Saturday - "Korean Conflict - The Forgotten War" promises to be the best yet.
If you attended past air shows, you'll appreciate what a bold statement that is. To top previous shows would mean Saturday's event would have to be nothing short of spectacular. We are confident it will be.
A dedicated core group of volunteers have hung together since the beginning to gather sponsors, book performers and handle all the hundred and one logistical headaches that come with a show of this magnitude. Their experience for this, their third show, ensures they bring with them a wealth of knowledge from past events. Their enthusiasm and energy is contagious, and it's easy to see after spending a few minutes around them that they are professionals.
We urge you to look on page 17 of the Wings Over Alpena insert that appeared in the newspaper this week to see all the committee members. The fruits of their labor will be unveiled Saturday for all of us.
If past years are any indication, Saturday will be a busy one in Alpena. If you are headed to the air show, leave yourself plenty of time as traffic will back up early, and the lines on M-32 will be long. Patience definitely will need to be a virtue Saturday.
We urge residents to be good neighbors while at the airport and base, and follow the strict rules and regulations that will be in effect that day. Because part of the base complex will be utilized, it requires some extra security measures be taken.
Enjoy the show. Enjoy the airplanes. Enjoy the fact that yet again, Northeast Michigan is someplace special this time of year.
