Young’s Appliance to partner with Art Van

August 13, 2012
Steve Schulwitz - News Staff Writer , The Alpena News

ALPENA - Young's Appliance in Alpena has been a staple of the community for more than 100 years, with owner Bob Young and his staff providing top-notch customer service and quality products. In order to offer a wider array of products, quicker shipping, and add jobs in Alpena, Young has agreed to partner with Art Van Furniture.

The move will allow the current store to keep a certain amount of control over the store, while increasing the services it will be able to offer its customer base.

"I'm going to be very much involved, and the family around me will be equally important, because we will be the leading furniture provider in northeastern Michigan," Young said. "The expansion of the business will result in about 10-12 new employees because of the added volume we expect to generate."

Young said because Art Van is a major player in the furniture word, the store will now be able to provide a larger selection, as well as more timely delivery. He said there will be some changes at the store, but everything customers expect will remain consistent.

"We're looking at being able to offer all of the brands Art Van does and have it delivered within 24-48 hours. If we don't have it in our store, Art Van has a 1 million-square-foot warehouse in Warren and they do. If it comes form the warehouse to the home, it doesn't need to be moved twice."

Young said the renovations and changes will begin shortly, but assured his customers that Young's will continue ahead as normal and be included in the store's name.

"We are keeping with what has always made us strong, and that is the name, the appliances and the electronics," Young said. "This is the first of 18 planned stores in which Art Van partners with the store's owner. It is a first in which a store becomes a franchise, with the local management and ownership staying intact."
