ALPENA - Ed Black held off a challenge from fellow Democrat Don Dowling Jr. by beating him 1,729 to 484 to earn a second term as Alpena County prosecutor following Tuesday's primary election. Black will run unopposed in the general election in November.
In Alpena County 17.14 percent, or 4,066, of the more than 23,729 registered voters filled out ballots and Black tallied 78.20 percent of the vote in his race. Black said he enjoyed a conservative night with his employees from the office waiting for the results to come from the county clerk's office. Black had high praise for his opponent, who called to concede before the final totals were in.
"I'm very impressed with the fact Mr. Dowling called prior to the tally, and I have a lot of respect for him," Black said. "He is a good man and the fact that he called showed that he is."
Black said his re-election was made possible by the hard work of his supporters.
"I'm extremely grateful for the support and help that I have received from so many individuals," Black said. "I am also very thankful for all of the people that got out to vote. I just want to give everyone a thank you."
The voters also approved all six of the City of Alpena's proposals to amend the city's charter, and the 911 surcharge renewal also was approved by the final total of 2,719 to 916.
