This election will bring dramatic changes to Alpena County. The first change is the loss of our long serving excellent, County Treasurer Joelyn McCallum. Her knowledge and skill will be greatly missed. We have two candidates for County Treasurer who have little or no knowledge of County finances. We have a candidate running against Commissioner Lyle VanWormer who is our Finance Committee Chairman. Commissioner VanWormer has been an extremely efficient Finance Chairman for the past four years and is one of the County's hardest working commissioners.
The loss of Commissioner VanWormer would lead to a replacement commissioner who wants to hire a county coordinator, which would cause the lay off of three county employees. We have not had a county coordinator for the past three years and we have done well without one. The loss of Commissioner VanWormer would remove a person who has more than a working knowledge of county finances. Evening board meetings have been tried in the past and attendance was the same or lower than afternoon meetings. The cost was higher.
Commissioner VanWormer was the lead person as Finance Chairman on the Drone Project at the airport which would have a positive effect on Alpena County.
Maintain Commissioner VanWormer. Alpena County needs his knowledge and experience.
