Volunteers from the Alpena Fire Department and the Northeast Michigan Habitat for Humanity install a handicap access ramp at the home of Alpena resident Elizabeth Vandagriff on River Street on Monday, the third ramp project this year for Habitat and the first for the fire department. Fire Chief Bill Forbush said he saw Vandagriff carefully navigate her front steps every morning on his way to work, and though she did not ask for help, Forbush asked Habitat for Humanity to lend its time and extra ramp to do her a favor. “We all know there aren’t coincidences, but just by coincidence, if you will, (Habitat) happened to have a ramp that was donated, and (Executive Director Mike Wilson) was able to put it together, and I got my guys to come over and help, and it’s just a wonderful community project,” he said.
