The League of Women Voters of Alpena County was very encouraged when Gov. Rick Snyder vetoed SB 754, SB 803. and HB 5061, bills that would have created barriers to voting particularly for the poor, the elderly, the disabled and minority groups. We commend the governor for his leadership on this issue. Gov. Snyder in explaining his veto of these bills stated in part, that" these bills may cause confusion with ongoing voter registration efforts" and also "this legislation could create confusion among absentee voters." The League, a nonpartisan organization, has for decades held the position of protecting voting rights and encouraging active participation of all citizens.
