ATLANTA - The Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education approved Superintendent Don Haskin Jr.'s search for an assistant principal and building maintenance transportation/athletic director. Haskin said the two positions will require multiple expertise and qualifications, but will help with the 11 roles he has recently taken on at Atlanta Community Schools.

During the Thursday school board meeting Haskin said currently his roles at Atlanta Community Schools include superintendent, principal, teaching one class (high school physical education), special education director, title 1, curriculum, transportation, maintenance, athletics, counselor, Kellogg and at-risk director.

"We have a lot of needs that need to be met ... I'd like to get moving on this as soon as possible," Haskin said.

According to Haskin, the assistant principal position will target academics by increasing state and federal programming scores.

"Health benefits and retirement packages will not be included in either positions. My feeling is this would draw someone in who is retired," Haskin said.

Haskin said the proposed building maintenance transportation/athletic director is also a crucial position at the school, but both positions' hours and salaries are currently negotiable.

While the board agreed to Haskin's pursual, many showed concerns about where funding will come from to hire qualified people for the positions. After much discussion, Trustee Dave Smith made the motion for Haskin to search for an assistant principal for 24 hours per week and a maintenance transportation/athletic director to work close to or at full time.

"I considered my strengths and abilities that I have. I'm going to look for someone who can fill what I don't have, so we can get the job done," Haskin said.

Haskin will be looking for two perspective employees, an assistant principal with an advanced degree (masters or doctorate), and the other position will also require correct certifications. Haskin plans on moving forward in the process and will be presenting more information to the board during its next regular board meeting.
