ALPENA - The Alpena County Finance Committee is going to recommend to the full board of commissioners that the county issue a Request for Proposal for the operation management duties at Plaza Pool. The move is just one of several in which the county may consider hiring management groups to care for county facilities.
Commissioner Lyle VanWormer said successful hirings at the airport and the Northern Lights Arena have led to the county considering outsourcing the responsibility to other qualified parties.
"We're looking at all of the things the county owns, because if it saves money it only makes sense," VanWormer said. "We may not be as good as running some of these places as others, and if there are cost benefits to it, then all the options should be explored."
VanWormer said the Alpena County Regional Airport and the Northern Light Arena are examples of how qualified management groups or people can not only shave expenses off the budget, but add revenue.
"I would say the pool is the perfect to look at, and maybe we could look at the fairgrounds in the future," VanWormer said. "We saw how well the arena is going and talked about incorporating it in other areas, but now several different people have contacted us about the pool. We figured it wouldn't hurt to accept proposals and see what is out there."
