I applaud Health Department Director John Bruning and Prosecutor Ed Black for taking action against those businesses selling the dangerous substance known as synthetic marijuana. As a former substance abuse counselor, I know first hand the extreme damage this "legal" substance has caused our citizens and their families. The lure of a drug that was legal and would not show up on a drug test was a huge temptation for those with addiction related legal problems.
I saw previously well behaved children, as young at 11 years old, become uncontrollable. Some shoplifted and even stole from their own parents to obtain the drug. I am happy that a problem, which the substance abuse treatment community has been aware of for some time, has reached everyone's awareness. It is just sad that so many had to suffer before it did so.
I, for one, will not be frequenting the businesses who have been identified as continuing to make huge profits selling this substance, long after they became aware of the toll it was taking on our community. Please join me in sending a message, that their conscienceless, greedy behavior will not soon be forgotten.
