The Alpena News

A structure fire on Commercial Street was controlled and left no one injured Tuesday morning.

Alpena Fire Department crew responded at 8:36 a.m. to 811 Commercial for a fully engulfed structure fire. Prior to arrival, the city police department updated responding fire crews that heavy smoke and fire were coming from the structure and the building was unoccupied. According to central dispatch the 911 call came from surrounding neighbors. At that time a full department page went out to the off-duty firefighters.

Units arrived on scene with heavy smoke and fire coming from the east and north sides of the building extending into the attic space. Fire crews initiated an aggressive interior attack with multiple hand lines and positive pressure ventilation. Alpena Township Fire Department was called for mutual aid and assisted in fire ground operations throughout the incident. The fire was reported to be under control around 9:30 a.m., and fire crews remained on scene for an extended period of time doing salvage and overhaul operations. During overhaul operations, fire crews extracted the unharmed resident cat from under the bathroom tub and gave it to home owner Heather Alexander.
