Emergency sirens not sounded just for fun

June 10, 2012
The Alpena News

In response to Mr VanDuinen - The sirens are for warning residents of impending dangerous situations. They are not toys, and the 911 dispatchers are not children. The sirens are run when the National Weather Service reports to our center a weather emergency in our county. The only exception to this is the first Saturday of each month at 1 p.m. when they are tested for three minutes. As the Lead Dispatcher for the center I invite Mr VanDuinen to contact me and I will be happy to explain to him the detailed procedures we follow in the event of these emergencies.
