A little perspective needed on News’ stance

June 1, 2012
The Alpena News

Regarding David Smith's letter about the right wing editorial views. First of all, editorial content is just opinion, we all have the right to agree or disagree. Look at the difference of opinion that exists between the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News. If and when The Alpena News starts reporting the news in a biased way, I could understand the argument, but currently that situation does not exist. Editorials should reflect the views of the owners, investors and editors of the newspaper. And it may be "Right Wing" but the Alpena News did not censor or restrict publication of the author's letter. Isn't this an example of the right wing honoring the citizen's right to express their views? I don't always agree with the views of the Alpena News, however it is the organizations right to publish their opinions, just as Mr. Smith had his opinion published. If we need more liberal views, people could establish another newspaper. Or, they can publish pamphlets, or use other sources (the internet) to get their messages across. Remember, Thomas Paine's publishing of the pamphlet "Common Sense" helped build support for our nation to declare independence. I am not criticizing Mr. Smith's comment on the views of The Alpena News, but I do criticize all people who find it easy to complain rather than spending their time and energy by taking action to correct the problems they perceive to exist.
