We're glad to see community leaders join together and agree the SkyWest proposal for service to and from Alpena County Regional Airport is the best option now before the Department of Transportation.
In a letter to DOT officials, Mayor Matt Waligora shared with them that he, "the chairman of the Alpena Board of Commissioners, the Chairman of the Alpena County Regional Airport Committee, the Airport Manager, the Executive Director of the Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce and the Target Alpena Director of Economic Development," all join him with their support of SkyWest as the preferred carrier for future service.
"We are overjoyed to have worked with SkyWest Airlines and for that carrier to bid to provide Delta branded regional jet service at our airport," Waligora said.
In addition, he said when considering all the bids received during the most recent proposal period, he and community leaders believed the SkyWest was the clear winner as it "preserves the true network carrier service at Alpena" and provides the best opportunity for growth and use of commercial air service at the airport.
We certainly agree, and advocated right from the start for SkyWest as the selected carrier.
Ultimately, the decision is that of DOT officials, but now is the time for you to add your opinion, if you desire. Alpena Area Chamber Executive Director Jackie Krawczak is coordinating the community's efforts, and she can be reached at 358-5689.
We are inching ever so close to ultimately knowing who the next commercial air provider will be in Alpena.
The SkyWest proposal is the choice of the community. Hopefully, it will be the choice of DOT officials as well.
