A surprising stretch of warm weather in March allowed area track teams to get outside to practice earlier than expected and it's paid big dividends this season. Not only were teams able to get outside earlier, those teams were able to find their stride much quicker as times went down and distances increased seemingly with every meet.
With regionals and league meets recently completed, the area's best athletes will take center stage today at the 9th annual Alpena News Honor Roll Invitational, which will take place at 4 p.m. today at Alcona High School.
Who will be this year's best? Last year Alpena's Emily McAnsh and Hillman's Brandon Baur were named the Female and Male Athletes of the meet, combining for five individual first-place finishes. In addition, four meet records were broken and two were tied.

For many of the athletes competing in the meet, today will serve as a precursor to this weekend's state finals where nearly all the schools in the area have qualified in individual or in team events.
The Honor Roll Invitational is never short on excitement and this year should be no exception with Northeast Michigan track and field's best of the best set to compete.
