SAULT STE. MARIE-The Alpena baseball team went 1-2 over the weekend at the Sault Tournament on Saturday.
The Wildcats began the day with a 5-1 win over Sault. Tim Atkinson pitched the first 5 1/3 innings and Cody Tucker came on in a bases-loaded situation to earn the save.
Atkinson had two hits and Brady Marwede had two hits for Alpena (17-16), which scored four runs in the first inning.
In Alpena's second game, the Wildcats lost to Escanaba 9-0. Marwede pitched 5 1/3 innings and Dylan Hoes had both of Alpena's hits.
Shepard got the better of Alpena in the Wildcats' third game, winning 12-5.
Mitch Skiba pitched the first 3 1/3 innings and was relieved by Tucker.
Zachary Dewar and Zach Nash each had two hits and Ryan Hendricks hit a home run.
Alpena will play at Sault on Tuesday.
Hurons win John Glenn Tourney
BAY CITY-The Rogers City softball team added another tournament win to its 2012 resume, beating Bay City John Glenn in the finals of the Bay City John Glenn Tournament on Saturday.
Melissa Pomranke threw seven innings, scattering five hits and fanning 12.
The Hurons (31-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Rebecca Meredith had three hits including a double and an RBI; Nikkie LaLonde had two hits and a pair of RBI; Linnea Brege and Brooklyn Idalski each had two hits and single hits went to Logan Fleming, Courtney Streich, Morgan Hall and Cassie Brege.
"Melissa pitched great, we played great defense and had timely hitting," Rogers City coach Karl Grambau said.
Earlier in the day, the Hurons shut down Croswell-Lexington 5-0, scoring three runs in the first and adding a run in the third and fifth innings.
Fleming had two doubles and an RBI and single hits went to LaLonde, Meredith, Idalski, Pomranke, Hall and Linnea Brege.
Pomranke allowed eight hits and struck out four in seven innings.
Rogers City will host Inland Lakes in a presdistrict game on Tuesday.
