AHS girls track 2nd at BNC championships, AHS boys 4th

GAYLORD-The Alpena girls track team took the Big North Championships by storm on Wednesday, winning 10 of 17 events to finish in second place.

Traverse City Central edged the Wildcats 182-169, Gaylord was third (63) and Traverse City West was fourth (61).

Emily McAnsh took four firsts for the Wildcats, winning the 100 dash (13.0), the 200 dash (26.8), the 400 dash (59.5) and the high jump (4-11).

Christina Kollien won the 100 hurdles and set a school record (15.8), while Paige Stepanski set a new school mark in the process of winning the 300 hurdles (46.6).

Taylor Stepanski won both the 800 run (2:23.2) and the 1600 run (5:25.2) and the Wildcats also won the 1600 relay with Paige Stepanski, Taylor Stepanski, Kelsey Lewis and Emily Duncan finishing first first (4:08.7).

Emily Ferguson topped the field in the discus (118-10).

Other top finishers for Alpena were: Lewis in the 800 run (3rd, 2:24) and the 1600 run (3rd, 5:31.3); Taylor Genschaw in the long jump (3rd, 15-5); Paige Stepanski in the 100 hurdles (3rd, 16.91); and the 3200 relay team of Lewis, Taylor Stepanski, Amanda Dort and Racheal McDonald (2nd, 9:59.2).

Fairview second in 9/10 meet

FAIRVIEW-The Fairview girls track team finished second at a 9/10 home meet on Monday in Fairview.

Johannesburg-Lewiston won the meet with 209 points, beating Fairview (116), Hillman (84), Alcona (49) and Mio (32).

Julianna Gusler won the 100 hurdles (17.34) and the Eagles also took first in the 400 relay (56.02).

Other top finishers for Fairview were: Johnna Weidbrauk in the 100 hurdles (2nd, 17.74), the 100 dash (2nd, 13.55) and the long jump (3rd, 14-2); Kiersten Nolan in the discus (3rd, 60-10) and the shot put (5th, 23-0); Samantha Babcock in the high jump (3rd, 4-5); Logan Winton in the high jump (4th, 4-3) and the 800 run (4th, 2:47.94); Kailee Conant in the long jump (4th, 11-5 1/2); Chase Barton in the pole vault (2nd, 5-6.1); Abby Lanczak in the 3200 run (2nd, 15:01.45) and the 1600 run (5th, 6:54.50); the 800 relay team (3rd, 2:03.95); Jessica O'Grady in the 1600 run (4th, 6:44.42); Abbie Wineman in the 400 dash (4th, 1:15.25); the 3200 relay team (2nd, 12:19); and the 1600 relay team (2nd, 4:54.02).

Hillman's only first of the day came in the 1600 relay (4:41.31).

Other top finishers for Hillman were: Grace Buck in the 300 hurdles (5th, 1:02.05) and the high jump (2nd, 4-7); Michelle Smith in the discus (2nd, 70-9) and the shot put (4th, 23-1); Ashlee Williams in the discus (4th, 56-2) and the shot put (2nd, 24-10); the 800 relay team (2nd, 2:02.58); Riley Appelgren in the 800 run (5th, 2:52.46); Karena Tracey in the 100 dash (4th, 13.91) and the 200 dash (2nd, 29.29); Shelby Dean in the 400 dash (2nd, 1:12.59); Julia Hunt in the 200 dash (4th, 30.57); and the 400 relay team (3rd, 1:00.32).

Megan Quick took three firsts for Alcona, topping the field in the 800 run (2:29.38), the 100 dash (13.30) and the 400 dash (1:01.66).

Karina Cole won the 1600 run for Alcona (6:04.35) and was second in the 800 run (2nd, 2:43.15).

Pebbles won the pole vault for the Thunderbolts (6-0).

Other top finishers for Mio were: Faust in the 300 hurdles (2nd, 54.79); Chelsea Burke in the pole vault (4th, 5-6); the 1600 relay team (4th, 6:03.26) and the 400 relay team (4th, 1:03.84).

BOYS TRACK

Alpena 4th at BNC Championships

GAYLORD-The Alpena boys track team took fourth place at the Big North Championships on Wednesday in Gaylord.

Traverse City Central won the meet with 177 points, Cadillac was second (104), Traverse City West was third (97), Alpena had 77 points and Gaylord was fifth with 52 points.

The Wildcats had three second-place finishers: Ashton Dever in the long jump (19-9 1/2); Ethan Seigert in the discus (139-9) and Travis LaCross in the 800 run (2:00.6).

Third place finishes went to: Jared LaBarge in the 800 run (2:03.3); the 800 relay team of Gavin Aikens, Wyatt Boboltz, Aaron Keyes and Drew Shields (1:35.4) and the 3200 relay team of LaBarge, LaCross, Eli Martin and Jacob Benson (8:28.2).

Other top finishers for Alpena were: Dever in the 100 dash (5th, 11.6) and the 200 dash (5th, 24.0); Andrew Sumerix in the 100 hurdles (4th, 16.2) and the high jump (4th, 5-9); J.D. Niergarth in the high jump (5th, 5-7); Evan Frank in the pole vault (5th, 11-4); Seigert in the shot put (5th, 46-3 3/4); Keyes in the 300 hurdles (4th, 42.8); Josh Bell in the 300 hurdles (6th, 43.0); the 400 relay team of Boboltz, Sumerix, Keyes and Shields (6th, 47.3) and the 1600 relay team of LaCross, LaBarge, Shields and Dever (5th, 3:37.1).

Fairview second in 9/10 meet

FAIRVIEW-The Fairview boys track team took second place at a 9/10 meet on Monday in Fairview.

Johannesburg-Lewiston won the meet with 162 points, Fairview had 153 points, Hillman had 75, Alcona had 63 and Mio had 29.

Randy McKenzie had two firsts for the Eagles, winning the 400 dash (57.16) and the 200 dash (25.04).

Jacob Wojo won the shot put (34-4), the team of McKenzie, Jacob O'Grady, John Sarkozi and Matthew Luckey won the 800 relay (1:45.71); and the team of Brian Eaves, O'Grady, McKenzie and Hudson Szubelak won the 1600 relay (3:01.16).

Other top finishers for Fairview were: Austin Klein in the 300 hurdles (2nd, 49.95), the 100 hurdles (2nd, 20.28) and the high jump (tied for 3rd, 5-0); Jacob Klein in the 300 hurdles (4th, 52.64); Wojo in the discus (4th, 79-9); Dillon Diaz in the discus (5th, 73-3); Harold Cummings in the high jump (tied for 3rd, 5-0); Eaves in the pole vault (4th, 8-0), the 200 dash (3rd, 25.67) and the 400 dash (2nd, 57.29); Tony Oaks in the 3200 run (3rd, 13:27.53); Austin Handrich in the 3200 run (4th, 14:06.72); Stephen Cutliff in the shot put (4th, 32-2); the 3200 relay team of Austin Handrich, Oaks, Cummings and O'Grady (2nd, 10:26); Szubelak in the 800 run (2nd, 2:07.86); O'Grady in the 800 run (3rd, 2:20.33); Sam Burcicki (5th, 26.29); and the 400 relay team of Luckey, Diaz, Jacob Klein and Austin Klein (3rd, 55.03).

Josh Reinbold won the high jump for Hillman (5-2), Travis Powers won the 100 dash (11.92) and the 400 relay team won (50.34).

Other top finishers for Hillman were: Reinbold in the long jump (2nd, 17-9 1/2) and the 100 dash (4th, 12.37); Brenden Zimmer in the shot put (3rd, 32-4) and 100 hurdles (4th, 21.60); Devin Cheek in the 800 run (5th, 2:24.34) and the 1600 run (2nd, 5:15); Powers in the 200 dash (4th, 26.11); and the 1600 relay team (2nd, 4:13.65).

Garrette Norling won the long jump for Alcona (18-1) and also won the pole vault (9-0). Kyle Good won the 100 hurdles (19.15).

Other top finishers for Alcona were: Good in the 300 hurdles (3rd, 52.05); Steven Rizzotto in the pole vault (3rd, 8-0); Jacob Stelmachowake in the 1600 run (4th, 6:03); Norling in the 100 dash (2nd, 12.26) and the 400 dash (3rd, 1:00.56).

Zach Pattulo won the discus for Mio (92-0) and Bryce DeGrammont won the 800 run (2:05.52).

Other top finishers for Mio were: DeGrammont in the long jump (3rd, 17-0 1/2) and the 100 dash (5th, 12.40); Pattulo in the shot put (5th, 31-6 1/2).

BASEBALL

Hillman 2-2,

Onaway 6-1

ONAWAY-The Hillman baseball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Onaway on Wednesday, losing the opener 6-2 and winning the nightcap 2-1.

Kyle Henigan pitched the opener for the Tigers (13-18-1), allowing six runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings.

Jordon VanPamel was 2-for-2 and Michael Klein and David Julka each had a hit.

Mason VanPamel pitched for Hillman in the nightcap, allowing four hits and a walk in six innings.

Henigan was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Caleb Zimmer, Mason VanPamel and Jordon VanPamel each had a hit.

Hillman plays at Boyne City on Friday.
