One of Alpena's true gems - its farmers market - opens the 2012 season today.
Speaking to the "Good Morning Alpena" breakfast Friday, J.B. Cook, president of the Alpena Farmers Market, shared that because of good weather early, some "early market" produce will be available today, as well as craft items, baked goods, flowers, honey, maple syrup and information about 2012 market activities.
The market operates every Wednesday and Saturday in the municipal parking lot behind city hall. This year the market has some exciting plans for expansion, including the addition of an enclosed structure that will contain a cooking station and a location for seniors waiting for transportation to rest comfortably. Also planned for the market are retractable wind breaks that could allow market participants to operate year-round.
Alpena is fortunate to have a market of this quality, and that is a result of the great support that exists between citizens and producers over the years. The market is a win-win for everyone, and we're glad to see another season has arrived with today's opening.
