Alpena baseball splits with Ogemaw

The Alpena baseball team split a Big North Conference doubleheader Tuesday with Ogemaw Heights, winning the first game 7-3 and dropping the nightcap 4-2.

Mitch Skiba pitched the Wildcats to a complete-game win in the opener, allowing six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Ryan Hendricks led the Wildcats (8-9, 1-5 Big North) with two doubles and three RBI. Zach Nash also had a double.

The Falcons built a 4-0 lead in the first two innings of the second game and held off Alpena from there.

Luke Cordes pitched the first 1 1/3 innings for the Wildcats before being relieved by Tim Atkinson, who allowed one hit and two walks with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Brady Marwede led Alpena with two hits and Hendricks also had a hit.

Alpena hosts Posen today at 4 p.m.

Ogemaw 1-2

WEST BRANCH-The Alpena JV baseball team picked up two wins Thursday against Ogemaw, winning 16-1 (four innings) and 9-2.

Andy Marwede earned the win in the opener, pitching three innings and allowing three hits with three strikeouts. Caleb Myers pitched the final inning in relief.

Brad Styma was 2-for-3 at the plate and Ryan Cadarette was 3-for-4.

Cody Tucker pitched the Wildcats (12-6) to a win in the nightcap, allowing one run on two hits with a walk in four innings. Tyler Pintar pitched in relief and allowed one run on one hit.

Jake Kozlowski led Alpena at the plate going 2-for-3.

Alpena plays at Gaylord on Thursday.

Rogers City 4-9, Cheboygan 3-7

CHEBOYGAN-The Rogers City baseball team opened Tuesday's doubleheader against Cheboygan with a close win and then rallied back to beat the Chiefs in the nightcap, winning by scores of 4-3 and 9-7.

Chris Peacock pitched the first 4 1/3 innings of the opener for the Hurons (8-11), allowing three runs on one hit with four strikeouts.

Chad Karsten pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and had three strikeouts to earn the save.

Karsten led Rogers City at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

The Hurons rallied back in the nightcap with four runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Peacock earned the win, pitching two innings in relief, allowing one run and one walk with three strikeouts.

Karsten started the game, pitching four innings and allowed five runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

Peacock and Paul Wilbert each went 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

Rogers City hosts Mio on Thursday.

SOCCER

Gaylord 3, Alpena 0

GAYLORD-The Alpena girls soccer team fell behind 1-0 at halftime on Tuesday against Gaylord, but couldn't come back, ultimately losing to the Blue Devils 3-0.

Gaylord (7-2-1) scored with two seconds left in the first half and then added a goal three minutes into the second half after Alpena (4-8) knocked the ball in its own net off of a corner kick.

The final goal came with 10 minutes to play.

"The girls played hard and played well. We were just the victims of a couple of mistakes," said Alpena coach Tim Storch, who praised the individual efforts of Alex Przewozniak, Maggie Skiba, Emily Duncan and Sarah Swider.
