ALPENA - An assortment of Alpena Community College students have represented the school well, as revealed at the ACC Board of Trustees meeting Thursday.

In President Olin Joynton's report, he introduced the Michigan Works Alumni of the Year. Steve Kitzman, an alumnus of ACC from Lincoln, was selected out of a nine-county region and recently honored by State Sen. John Moolenaar and State Rep. Peter Pettalia.

"I'm truly blessed to have this opportunity the college gave me," he said, citing that he has a good job working as a biomedical technician at Alpena Regional Medical Center. "Pinch me ... I can't get over it."

"This is what we're here to do, take people with talent and develop that talent," Joynton said.

Jolee Greer was one of three ACC students to attend a conference March 29-30 geared toward college women to help provide career direction and create strong leaders.

"It was a real honor to be invited," Greer said. "The convention told us challenges women have in America and provided information to find what we may face when looking for jobs."

While Greer didn't nail down a dream career, she said one of her fellow attendees did and "lit up" after attending a session on women in the military.

Four utility tech students have returned from a lineman competition in Arizona, and one left a first place champion in C-1 framing. It was the fifth time students participated in the competition, made possible from generous donors in the area, and they spent many weeks training for it.

"It's really neat to see how they've done, represented ACC," Joynton said.

Student Leadership member Rachel Carlson's final trustees meeting resulted in a brief update on the success of Thursday evening's talent show. The show raised $650, which was more than half of what they expected.

"I thoroughly enjoyed watching the talent show as an audience member," Chairman John Briggs said.

During a faculty report, Nan Hall and Karol Walchak praised their 13 BCA 165 mass media students' work conducting informal market research. The students collected data, conceived shots, and ultimately produced three separate advertisements using Irish Spring deodorant, which they filmed in different ACC locations.

"Far be it for us to take any credit. They took the ball and ran with it," Hall said.
