Alpena Municipal Council's decision to allow snowmobile use on designated trails in the city again next winter we believe is a good one.
We supported council's initial decision to experiment with the concept, and believe the weather conditions from the winter never really allowed for a fair or accurate accessment of the snowmobile plan in the city.
Continuing the plan for another winter season makes sense, and will allow everyone - users, residents and enforcement officers - more of a chance to accurately access its strengths and weaknesses.
"We didn't have a significant cry from the citizens who live along the trail," City Engineer Rich Sullenger said in his report to council this week about the first winter's trial run.
As long as snowmobile riders are considerate of residents' property and hours of operation, we believe the benefits of city travel should outweigh any problems. If this works the way we envision it could, allowing snowmobiles on designated trails within the city should also result in more winter tourism opportunities than what have existed in past years in Alpena.
