ROCHESTER-The Alpena Community College softball team had as good a start to the 2011-12 season as it could have hoped for, sweeping Oakland 6-1 and 4-1 in a doubleheader on Saturday.
The Lumberjacks (2-0, 2-0 MCCAA Eastern) batted .370 for the day while committing just one error and allowing no stolen bases.
Brittany Maki pitched ACC in the first game, allowing six hits, striking out four, walking one and allowing just one earned run.
Brianna Grimm hit her first career home run in ACC’s 6-1 win.
At the plate, Brianna Grimm was 2-for-4 and hit her first career home run, launching a shot to left field in the fourth inning.
Maggie Prevo was 2-for-4 and Kasi Swajanen was 3-for-4.
Lindsay Ponik was the winning pitcher in the second game, allowing one earned run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. She also struck out one with no walks.
Maki earned the save, allowing three hits and no runs.
The Lumberjacks were hot at the plate again, but also made some stellar defensive plays to keep Oakland from breaking the game open. In the fourth inning, Oakland loaded the bases with one out, before Swajanen laid out to make a diving catch for the second out. Ondreya Willis caught a fly ball for the third out.
Christina Bednarski was 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning that gave ACC a 2-1 which they built on as the game went on.
Swajanen was 3-for-3 at the plate; Rachael Barnes was 2-for-2; and Prevo was 1-for-2.
ACC will play at Henry Ford in doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday.
