WASHINGTON, DC: Congressman Dan Benishek has announced that Luke Donald of Herron has been named to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
"I am very honored that Dr. Benishek's office chose to nominate me for the Naval Academy. There are many qualified candidates in our area, so I view this as a great honor," Donald said. "Serving our country by attending the Naval Academy would be a privilege to anyone with an opportunity like this ahead of them."
"Luke certainly deserves this honor based on his accomplishments both at school and in his community.
With his top-caliber record, we know Luke will be an excellent addition to the U.S. Navy and the Naval Academy," said Benishek, a general surgeon from Iron Mountain.
Donald has attended Alpena High School since 2008 and has a cumulative GPA of 3.9. He is in the top 10 percent of his graduating class.
While in high school, Donald has been involved in numerous extracurricular activities including, National Honor Society, History Club, Senior Planning Team and the Northeast Michigan Youth Advisory Council. He has also been involved in many school sports including, tennis, wrestling, cross country, and track and field.
Donald applied for a nomination through Benishek's office and was interviewed by an advisory board in Gaylord on Nov. 3, 2011. He was offered appointment by the Naval Academy on March 15, 2012.
Donald is scheduled to graduate from Alpena High School in June and will begin his education at the Naval Academy this summer.
"I believe Luke has a very bright future ahead of him as he serves our country in the coming years," Benishek said. "His family and friends should be deservedly proud of his accomplishments. We wish Luke the best of luck at the Naval Academy."
Founded in 1845, the Naval Academy in Annapolis has approximately 4,400 undergraduates. The Naval Academy has an average acceptance rate of 8.4 percent.
