Eight of the top Midget BB hockey teams will be vying for the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association Midget BB state title this weekend at Northern Lights Arena as games began Friday and continue in round robin play today before the semifinals and finals on Sunday.
The tournament is being hosted by the Alpena Hockey Association.
Alpena is one of eight teams participating in the tournament along with Southgate, St. Clair Shores, Redford, Flint, St. Igance, Ontonagon and Ann Arbor.
In games played on Friday: Southgate defeated St. Igance 4-1; St. Clair Shores beat Flint 4-2; Redford beat Ann Arbor 11-3 and Ontonagon topped Alpena 11-3.
Alpena will play Ann Arbor today at 10:30 and Redford at 5:30.
Alpena finished second in its district behind St. Igance who topped Alpena 8-0 to win the district title.

Alpena is no stranger to success in the Midget BB Tournament. In 2010, Alpena beat Marquette 3-0 to win the state title in Midland while finishing with a 53-2 record.
