Posen hands Alcona first loss

POSEN-The Posen girls basketball team played the role of spoiler on Thursday, handing Alcona its first and only loss of the regular season.

Korynn Hincka had 23 points as the Vikings defeated the Tigers 49-36 at Posen High School in the regular season finale for both teams.

With the score tied at 35 late in the game, Posen (18-2) ended the contest on a 14-1 run and went 8-for-12 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Posen was 17-for-25 from the charity stripe for the game.

The win gave the two teams a split for the season after Alcona beat Posen 60-44 in the season opener.

"It's a big win for the kids," Posen coach Karl Momrik said. "Thought we had the shots we needed all night, but they didn't start falling until late."

Karina Cole led Alcona (19-1) with 20 points and Anna Couture added nine points for Posen.

Posen led 9-8 after one quarter and 19-14 at the half.

"We were outrebounded and didn't take care of the ball against their pressure," Alcona coach Dan O'Connor said. "We didn't finish and Posen did."

Alcona outscored Posen 14-11 in the third quarter, but couldn't keep up with the Vikings in the final period and was outscored 19-8.

The Tigers will open district play against Tawas on Monday in Tawas while Posen will play the winner of Monday's Hale/Hillman game on Wednesday in the district semifinal in Posen.

Hillman 35, Wolverine 10

HILLMAN-The Hillman girls basketball team ended the regular season on a high note, defeating Wolverine 35-10 on Thursday.

Jensen Tchorzynski led the Tigers (12-7) with seven points.

Hillman will play Hale in the opening round of district play on Monday in Posen.

Mio 59, Hale 43

HALE-Nona Rhoads scored 26 points and pulled in 10 rebounds as the Mio girls basketball team won its regular season finale, beating Hale 59-43 on Thursday.

Shelby Satkowiak had 17 points and Connor Smith added 10 rebounds for the Thunderbolts (12-7).

Mio will play Atlanta in Posen on Monday in the opening round of districts.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Alcona 60, Oscoda 35

LINCOLN - Bryan Layton scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Brock LaVergne had 12 points and 13 rebounds as Alcona defeated Oscoda 60-35 on Thursday in the first round of the Huron Shores Conference boys basketball tournament.

Jared Steiner added 10 points for the Tigers, who play Whittemore-Prescott tonight in Lincoln for the league tournament title. W-P downed Tawas 45-41 on Thursday.

Alcona (16-3) controlled the boards and used its press to take advantage of the Owls. The Tigers led 33-19 at the half and never looked back.
