Friends group forming for fishery

January 25, 2012
The Alpena News

The public is invited to a meeting for anyone interested in the fisheries conservation and management work being done on the Great Lakes. A core group of citizens wishes to move forward in developing a "friends group" to support and become more involved in the important work that the Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office accomplishes annually.

An organizational meeting will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services office, 480 W. Fletcher Street, and is open to the public.

The office fulfills USFWS fishery goals in Lake Huron, western Lake Erie, and connecting waterways of the St. Marys, St. Clair and Detroit rivers. The Alpena office provides a regional focus for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service's mission by providing leadership and assistance to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, states, Native American Tribes, and other interested entities - encouraging cooperative conservation, restoration and management of the fishery resources of the Great Lakes Basin.

In addition to fisheries issues, the office's Habitat and Ecosystem Health Unit addresses fish passage concerns and works with private landowners to improve habitat through the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program.
