December 7, 2011
The Alpena News

Alpena Community College dance instructor and choreographer, Christine Giordano, brings one of the world's best-loved composers, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, to life this week in a Spotlight Series performance especially for a young audience.

The event, "Tchaikovsky for Kids," will be staged twice; an evening event is scheduled on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee on Saturday at 2 p.m.

ACC's Spotlight Series offers a variety of educational and cultural performances each season. The annual children's performance for the series has grown increasingly popular. This year's event is an ideal holiday-themed outing for families.

Giordano offers special appeal to youngsters by choreographing some of Tchaikovsky's better-known pieces from "Swan Lake," "Sleeping Beauty" and the holiday classic "The Nutcracker" for young dancers.

In addition to offering entertainment, the Spotlight Series annual children's performance endeavors to educate children in musical and literary classics. Tchaikovsky is a world-renowned Russian composer who wrote symphonies, operas, ballets, instrumental and chamber music, and songs.

Young and not-so-young audience members will recognize the beautiful and evocative melodies excerpted from Tchaikovsky's ballets in this event.

All performances take place in ACC's Granum Theatre. Tickets are available at the ACC Bookstore, at Nieman's Family Market, by phone and at the door.

Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $7 for youth and $30 for a family. ACC students are admitted free to all performances with their ACC student ID card. For more information, call 358-7271.
