Salvation Army taking applications for Christmas assistance

November 2, 2011
The Alpena News

The Salvation Army will be taking applications for Christmas assistance for Alpena County residents from Nov. 7-11 at the Salvation Army Corps Community Center, 722 N. Second. The building will be open Monday-Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for applications and Thursday-Friday from 2-6 p.m. Applicants should enter through the parking lot door in back.

Applicants need to bring a picture ID for themselves with an Alpena County address and some form of ID for all others in the household, such as one of the following: birth certificate, school ID or Medicaid card. Applicants will also need to show in print the last four digits of Social Security numbers for each adult (not for children) and proof of all income, such as check stubs, Social Security, disability, SSI amounts, food stamps and child support amounts. Parents applying for toys should bring ideas for gifts and sizes if needed.

Salvation Army Christmas clients will receive a food box with enough food for three to four days in addition to Christmas dinner, along with a small food voucher to buy meat and fresh items at the grocery store. Families with children ages 17 and under receive toys and/or other age-appropriate gifts for those children from the Salvation Army Angel Tree, new books from the Friends of the Library Blizzard of Books project and new mittens/hats for each child.

Families are asked to request toys from only one provider, but they should keep in mind that children can receive clothing or other necessities from the Alpena Community College Christmas Wish List and still be eligible for food and toys from the Salvation Army. Applicants for toys and food will be cleared with other area Christmas assistance providers, so that families do not receive toys or food from more than one source to insure there is enough to go around to all families in need.

The Salvation Army expects to assist more than 350 Alpena County families with Christmas food and toys this year. The children of these families receive toys and gifts donated by those who take "angels" from the Salvation Army Angel Trees located in Alpena Mall and Wal-Mart beginning Nov.11.

A new Angel Tree focusing on teens is being sponsored at the Besser Credit Union beginning Nov.14.
