Jen Delaney of Gaylord has long been interested in health-related issues like diet and exercise. More recently, she became convinced that what a person puts on their body is just as important as what they put into it.
Not satisfied with the commercial skin care products currently on the market and having found it expensive to purchase existing organic products, she decided about a year ago to take matters into her own hands. Using 100 percent natural ingredients, Delaney developed a line of lip balms and lip glosses that are now being offered through Olivet Book and Gift in downtown Alpena.
"I like knowing what the ingredients are in things, so I like making it myself," Delaney said. "There are a lot of natural products out there that are really expensive. That was a drive to create things."
Jen Delaney of Gaylord poses with some of her all natural lip balms and lip glosses that she makes through her home-based business, Sanatio Skin Care.
Delaney will be at Olivet Book and Gift on June 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to share about her new products and her new company, Sanatio Skin Care. The Alpena store is one of more than 50 locations around northern Michigan where her product line is now carried.
Besides a desire to create natural products for healthier living, Delaney's decision to start her own company also had just as much to do with her faith and a major lifestyle change. After living in suburban Chicago for 14 years, she and her husband, Bill, and their five children opted in 2007 to retire to Gaylord, hoping for more space and a cleaner environment.
When their house in Chicago didn't sell for over a year, they began looking for a way to ease the financial burden. They now believe that starting Sanatio Skin Care (Sanatio is a Latin noun meaning "a healing" or "a curing") was a matter of God's provision.
"Even though we knew we would have to work hard, we knew that God would provide," Delaney said. "That was definitely motivation."
Delaney's husband designed the product packaging and their website. The products are all hand-produced a few at a time in a section of their kitchen dedicated to the business.
Delaney uses all natural oils, waxes, butters, herbal extracts and pure essential oils in her lip balms and lip glosses. She located a couple of good suppliers for those ingredients, and believes that the natural ingredients found in God's environment are powerful.
"I love to be able to offer something reasonably priced and that's a good product," said Delaney, who also puts a high premium on relationships and people, and prefers to work with small businesses.
