June 18, 2011
The Alpena News

The Zonta Club of Alpena announced that Cathy Moe, a 10-year breast cancer survivor, will serve as the 2011 honorary chair for the Zonta Walks for Women Walk/5K Run on Oct. 1. The fifth annual event will take place on the campus of Alpena Community College, behind Van Lare Hall and travel along the banks of the Thunder Bay River.

Since its inception in 2007, the Zonta Walks for Women breast cancer awareness event has raised approximately $74,000.

These funds have been kept locally and contributed to the Alpena Regional Medical Center. They have been used to purchase a computer aided detection software system, and to help fund the purchase of a Digital Mammography Radiology System. In addition, more than $38,000 has been directed to the Mammography Subsidy Fund at ARMC and has provided hundreds of women who are under or uninsured with mammograms.

The Zonta Club of Alpena is comprised of 40 members and it is an international service organization whose mission is to enhance the status of women, both locally and globally. There are a total of 31,110 members who belong to 1,212 clubs in 65 countries.

Penny Boldrey, chair of the event said, "This inspiring event unites the entire community to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about the importance of early detection, and to raise funds to provide mammograms to women who are unable to afford this life-saving diagnostic procedure."

The Zonta Club of Alpena members credit the success of their annual breast cancer awareness walk/5k run to the generous individuals and businesses that have supported it over the past years. In 2010, approximately 450 individuals walked and 80 runners participated in a 5K run. Together, they raised a total of $18,739 for the hospital's Mammography Subsidy Fund.

The net proceeds from this year's event will again be directed to ARMC and will be used to provide ongoing support to the Mammography Subsidy Fund. Sponsorship opportunities are available and sponsor levels are $250, $500, $750 and $1,200.
