Marine Corps League makes school donation

April 14, 2011
The Alpena News

The Marine Corps League meets the last Wednesday of each month. In March the members voted to support a student bus trip to a Detroit Red Wings hockey game.

This year is another good year for the league as membership is up, fish frys are doing well, and more expected fundraisers and community involvement are being planned.

2011 is the league's sponsorship of the County Veteran's Council. Commandant Tom Burton and the other members of the council are busy planning and getting ready for the upcoming Memorial Day veterans ceremonies to be held at the Alpena County Courthouse and Little Flanders Field.

Charter member Tom Bleau, left, and Tom Burton, current commandant of Marine Corps League Detachment 1327, are shown presenting Brenda Rost of Thunder Bay Junior High School with a check for $200 to assist in taking students to a Detroit Red Wings Hockey game this month. Twenty students are expected to make the trip via bus.

Maintenance at both places is scheduled for warmer weather but before the holiday. There are ideas about painting and fixing flag poles.

Anybody with a red, white and blue or military-themed float is encouraged to participate in the walk down Ninth Avenue between the flag raising and wreath placement ceremonies.

All Vets Council meetings are the first Monday of each month at VFW 2496 Post on Connon Street. The MCL has been active over the winter in support of the council and the VFW Posts in town. The organization has contributed time and money where needed and when available.

The commandant encourages all Marines past and present to call and or come to the meetings and consider joining in the detachment's comradeship and activities. For more information, contact Burton at 464-9554.
