LINCOLN- After a less than stellar defensive performance in last Thursday's win over Oscoda, the Alcona girls basketball team locked down on Mio Monday, beating the Thunderbolts 47-31.
The Tigers held Mio scoreless in the first quarter while jumping out to an 11-0 lead. A three pointer by Nona Rhoades 26 seconds into the second quarter finally put the Thunderbolts on the board, ending an 8:26 scoreless stretch.
Alcona (8-1) led 38-27 after three quarters and outscored Mio 9-3 in the fourth quarter.
After shooting blanks in the opening quarter, Mio (4-6) held its own with the Tigers, outscoring Alcona 13-11 in the second quarter.
Karina Cole led Alcona with 14 points.
"We moved the ball really well offensively. When we're moving the ball nice and crisp like we were, particularly like we were in the first quarter and then late in the third and early fourth, that really makes a difference and makes us much more efficient," Alcona coach Dan O'Connor said.
Kelsie Blamer led the Thunderbolts with 11 points.
Mio matched Alcona shot for shot in the third quarter, but the Thunderbolts couldn't get a defensive stop to slow the Tigers down. Mio got within nine points several times, but couldn't advance any further, thanks to Alcona's defense.
"Everyone I threw on the court did a fantastic job. That's one of things we stress, we gotta play good enough defense to keep us in the game, no matter what's going on offensively," O'Connor said. "We had a little hiccup last Thursday so it was good tonight to see us put our foot down a little bit and decide to play some defense and rebound as well. It was one shot and done."
In their first action of the season, Amy and Emily Nowak combined for 10 points for Alcona and Amy Nowak gave the Tigers added depth in the frontcourt.
Alcona will host Tawas on Thursday. The week won't get any easier for Mio, which heads to Posen on Thursday.
"I thought we had a pretty poor performance tonight," Mio coach Joe Breaugh said. "I think we gotta work on a whole lot of things the next couple days."
