September 11, 2010
The Alpena News

Jim and Charlotte (Brainerd) Mansfield of Spokane, Wash., celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a mass in their honor as well as a reception and dinner at the Coeur d'Alene Resort in Idaho. The celebration was hosted by their four children, two of whom were born in Alpena. They also plan to celebrate with a cruise through the Panama Canal in January.

The couple has been blessed with an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Benedict XVI. They were married at St. Peter's Cathedral in Marquette on Aug. 20, 1960. After graduating from Northern Michigan University, the couple moved to Alpena where Jim coached football and track and assisted in basketball at Catholic Central High School from 1961 to 1964. Both he and Charlotte taught at the school during that time.

In addition to Alpena, the Mansfields have resided in Grand Rapids and Birmingham as well as Spokane, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Laramie, Wyo. After teaching at CCHS, Jim enjoyed a successful career as the director of admissions at various institutions of higher education. These included the University of Detroit, Gonzaga University, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and the University of Wyoming where he retired from in 1999.
